Nearly 30 million people in the U.S. have some form of hearing loss, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

When you think about how critical hearing is to everyday life, communicating learning, just navigating the world around us, it's not surprising that the impact of hearing loss is significant.

It can have a negative effect on relationships, school or work performance, emotional well-being.

Some people with hearing loss are able to overcome its challenges with hearing aids,

but those devices can cost thousands of dollars so they're not financially feasible for everyone.

Fortunately, this week ushers in an important development for people who need help hearing.

For the first time,

the FDA is allowing over-the-counter hearing aids to be sold in the U.S.

The rule was made possible by legislation that was passed some five years back,

allowing the agency to create a new category of hearing aids that could be sold to consumers without a doctor visit or a prescription.
