Summary

Randy Hetrick was born in Santa Ana, California and grew up along the beaches of Orange County, California. He attended high school in Huntington Beach and developed a love for wrestling. He attended and graduated University of Southern California. He then volunteered for the Navy and picked the one specialty that had the highest attrition rate, the Navy Seals. He started out in Seal Team 1 and eventually moved to Seal Team 6. He was on deployment and he wanted to get a workout in and the facility where he was located didn’t have any workout facilities. He took his old Jujitsu belt and fashioned a strap that he used with an interior pedestrian door and training using straps was born. He separated from the Navy and applied to Stanford Business School. To his surprise, he was accepted and  he worked out on campus with his straps. The coaches of the school’s teams asked if he would make their teams straps so their athletes could train as well. He did and TRX was born.  According to Randy: “U.S., Navy SEALs have access to world class training facilities that rival those of professional athletes. At home, they have every machine and weight they could dream of. But packing all that equipment when a team is deployed for a covert operation isn’t feasible.

“If you go on an operation for a couple weeks, no one’s bringing treadmills,” Hetrick explains. “You would end up down there doing bear crawls, crab walks, plyometric star jumps, and probably more push-ups that you can shake a stick at. If you’re really lucky, you find some place you can hang off and do pull-ups.” The benefit of bodyweight exercises is that anyone can do them anywhere. The drawback is that SEALs need more intense challenges to train for their grueling missions.

Over the last 20-plus years, Hetrick’s design had evolved into the tool you see today—with noticeable upgrades to the handles and hardware—but the basic idea remains the same: anybody should be able to use the TRX Suspension Trainer anywhere. It truly is the do-it-all fitness tool.” While he was running TRX he developed OutFit, a company that: “Dubbed “TRX on Tour,” and manned by TRX Master Trainers, these tricked-out mobile sprinter vans, delivered amazing “flash mob” style group workouts all across the country for over two years. However, delivering such experiences on a grand scale was a pipe-dream in the technological landscape of the time. But Randy dreamed that, one day, the tech might catch up to the concept. Fast forward ten years, the technology had evolved and the time had  finally arrived. Randy’s dream of delivering TRX’s incredible training experiences into neighborhoods across America was finally a realistic possibility.”
