My wife and I want to attempt a through hike.

We're not sure we're ready for anything as large as the AT yet, but we're not

rolling it out.

We're in our late 50s.

Our children are now out of school and we're pretty much empty nesters.

Where do we start?

We're not ready to jump off that ledge yet onto a long trail, like I said.

But we would like to dip our toe in the water of backpacking.

For the record, we have never even done an overnight trip.

What would you recommend?

Well, Sneaky Pete, here's what I would say.

Start off by doing some overnight.
