Hey, Deservent listeners. Today's episode is a call-in with Colin. If you remember from previous

0:07.0

installments of this series, it is with Colin Miller, who is a very smart, articulate person

0:15.0

about really all things, but particularly about art and movies.

0:23.9

He's a screenwriter, director, theater guy,

0:27.5

and has a lot of interesting things to say about movies.

0:32.2

I have already recorded an episode, or at least a segment of an episode where I just kind of randomly yammered about movies and TV that I've watched in the past year. But I wanted to do a different sort of yammering today of talking about the Oscars, which are coming up, or actually by the time this episode airs, the Oscars would have already happened. So know that right now we're the week before the Oscars. I also just want to talk with Colin about

0:54.7

his take on movies in general, but also movies that he's seen from the past year. Also,

I want to try to comment on the psychological angle of a lot of these movies, of which some of them

might be a little surprising that we can even

1:10.9

have that conversation because some movies and TV don't really have that explicit angle.

1:16.3

But anyway, welcome to the podcast, Colin?

1:18.4

Well, thank you so much.

1:19.3

Yeah, it's always great to hear your voice and talk nerd out, I shall say.

1:25.1

This has been a very interesting year for film because one thing I've

1:29.4

noticed is that there's a real drive, even at the quote unquote prestige film level, to

1:36.1

reach general audiences, to get them into the theater, get them to put their phone down,

1:42.2

and also to get them really excited about the Oscars.

1:46.0

I've actually seen a lot more discourse around the Oscars this year than I did previous years.

1:53.1

So it's, yeah, it's a unique time where I feel like people are extra excited about movies,

1:59.0

but they're also extra ready to be hateful about movies. So it's

2:03.5

like as politics are hyperboizing, so are sort of our general perceptions of large-scale media,

2:11.1

which is an interesting landscape to navigate as someone who likes to talk about it in a
