Summary

Support Pushback at Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/aaronmate Ian Henderson, a veteran OPCW inspector who challenged a cover-up of his organization's investigation of an alleged chemical weapons attack in Syria, recently testified before the United Nations Security Council. At the meeting, Henderson was both attacked and ignored by U.S., UK, and French diplomats whose governments bombed Syria over allegations that Henderson's censored investigation undermined. At another UNSC gathering one week later, the U.S. and its allies continued their censorship campaign by voting to block the testimony of the OPCW's former chief, José Bustani, who had come to speak out in support of the whistleblowers. Pushback host Aaron Maté recaps the extraordinary events with excerpts of Henderson and Bustani's comments, as well as those of the Western ambassadors who tried to silence them. Welcome to Pushback. I'm Aaron Mate. Today we're going to recap two really important meetings

0:09.8

that happened at the UN Security Council about an issue that we've covered extensively at the

0:15.7

gray zone and that I think is one of the most overlooked stories of this century.

0:22.6

And that is the OPCW's Syria cover-up scandal,

0:26.6

where investigators who went to Syria to a town called Duma in April 2018

0:33.6

to investigate allegations of a chemical weapons attack against the Syrian government,

0:40.3

claim that their investigation was censored under U.S. pressure, that they found evidence that this alleged chemical incident in Duma was staged by militants on the ground,

0:52.3

but that the evidence that they collected was suppressed

0:56.0

and kept from the public. And the consequence of the censorship was to help justify

1:03.2

air strikes on Syria by the US, Britain and France that same month in April 2018, because they bombed Syria based on this allegation

1:13.3

that a chemical attack had occurred in Duma.

1:16.2

So we've covered this extensively.

1:18.5

The Western media across the spectrum has mostly ignored it with only a few exceptions.

1:25.4

And the OPCW and the U., Britain, and France have done everything they can

1:30.6

to silence these whistleblowers, these veteran OPCW inspectors who went to Syria, conducted

1:38.1

the investigation, wrote up a report, and had their evidence suppressed. So the latest phase of this was two meetings

1:47.4

of the UN Security Council,

1:48.8

where the Syria chemical weapons issue was on the agenda.

1:52.9

And we had one meeting where Russia and China

1:59.1

summoned several witnesses, including myself, because I've covered this extensively,

2:03.4

but also Ian Henderson, who was one of the veteran OPCW inspectors whose testimony was

2:09.2

silenced. A week later, there was another UN Security Council meeting with Russia presiding in
