Carl DeNaro had a big decision to make.

In October of 1976, Carl was a 20-year-old college dropout,

working a dead-end job and living the life of a self-described dope smoking hippie.

And if you're not aware of the term hippie, it relates to an American youth movement

that gained worldwide prominence in the late 60s. youth movement

In some ways it was a reaction to the ultra-conservative decade of the 1950s.

Boys grew their hair long, women refused to wear bras, free love was preached, and the invention of the birth control pill made it all much less stressful.

It was also a quasi-political movement that rose in opposition to the war in Vietnam.

Tens of thousands of young Americans were being drafted and forced to fight in a bloody conflict halfway around the world, and many of them didn't make it home.

The hippies were peaceful. They staged sit-ins, went to marches, and manifested iconic events like Woodstock.
