Hello everyone welcome back to the epic gardening podcast if you're listening to this podcast in order then you know yesterday we talked about the types of onions short day long day and day neutral now we're going into some general onion tips how to grow these guys successfully and the first thing to think about is a different flavor of

the type of onion to grow. We've talked about the day lengths, but we haven't talked about

the maturity level of how you're going to plant them, right? So you could start them from seed,

for sure. You could also start them from something called a set.

That is a young, small, dormant bulb

that has grown the previous year.

Unions are a biennial crop.

So this is already a close to one-year-old onion when you buy it from a set and plant a set.

Next you have transplants, which of course are just seeds that have been started already when you buy them.

Like you go to the nursery, you buy the transplants in the six packs.

Growing onions from seed can take quite a while.

It will take at least five months or so.

And you'll find seed for many varieties varieties just remember you have to get the one

that is going to bulb in the amount of day length that you have and if you don't remember

that then please go ahead and listen to yesterday's episode.

Sets because they are so old already,

they will mature in as little as two months

and they are a little bit less susceptible to disease

but it's harder to get good selection here because you have to buy

things that a grower has already selected for.

So you can't grow these more rarer types of onions because chances are that you can't find

sets for those types of onions so you may want to grow those from seeds. Now transplants
