Welcome to the Brett Bear podcast. I am on my way to China on the president's trip to Beijing. We wanted to set the table for that summit.

Joining us tonight is the former Prime Minister of Australia,

who has written a book about President Xi Jinping, and that is Kevin Rudd.

He's also the former ambassador to the U.S. from Australia, and he's the

president of the Asia Society in New York. Thanks for being here. Thanks for having us on the

program, Brett. Yes. So we're heading to this summit. I guess from your unique perspective,

how is Xi Jinping approaching this summit? Well, she is enormously self-confident.

He has no serious political opposition. He's been purging anyone who looks like they're a political

opponent, both from the military and the party. And he thinks he's in a reasonably

strong position, particularly given what he's done with technology recently and advances

within China. But at the same time, he also recognizes he has a underperforming economy

and rising youth unemployment.

So when he looks at this summit, his baseline interest in my view, Brett, is I, Xi Jinping

would like to have a stabilized U.S. relationship because I need that in order to stabilize

and improve my own economic performance.
