Summary

1 in 8. That's the proportion of women who will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, and most will end up requiring treatment and aftercare, which is neither easy nor cheap. The One-In-Eight project aims to raise awareness and money for the Wellness House of Yakima, a place where women affected by cancer receive the care they need. In this special episode, two-time breast cancer survivor, Shelley Desmarais from CLS Farms, joins Marshall to talk about this year's collaboration between CLS Farms, Yakima Valley Hops, and Roy Farms that allows brewers to contribute to a great cause by simply buying hops grown specifically for this purpose.  Buy Triumph hops now at Yakima Valley Hops and Spot Hops!

You're probably wondering why we're dropping an episode outside of our normal schedule.

The truth is it's because the topic we're going to be talking about in this one I think is important

0:09.5

enough to not bury in a regular episode and knowing our listeners I'm sure you're all going to agree.

I've got a wife, two daughters, I've got two sisters, and many other wonderful women in my life that I absolutely love dearly and sadly an

0:24.9

issue they have to deal with is the potential for breast cancer in fact I was

0:28.7

recently informed that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.

0:34.6

That is an astoundingly high number that frankly freaks me out.

0:39.7

Unfortunately, there's not much one can do to fully prevent this type of cancer.

0:43.6

Rather, the goal is to catch it as early as possible

0:46.8

and then for those people to receive treatment

0:48.8

before things get real bad.

0:51.0

Now this treatment is not easy. I've known a couple of people who've gone through it and they're absolute warriors in my book.

One of these people is owner of Yakima Washington's CLS Farms, Shelly Damore, a two-time breast cancer survivor who helps to run the

1:04.2

wonderful nonprofit called One in Eight, which raises awareness and money for

1:08.4

cancer care services in the Yakima Valley. Shelly, thank you so much for coming

1:12.2

on the show today to talk about this incredibly important subject.

1:15.0

Thank you so much for having me. I am a big fan and we've had you out to the farm before and so this just was exciting that you were willing to take the time to talk about one and eight.

1:28.9

It's absolutely my pleasure and I want to thank you first and foremost for allowing us to come out to your farm for the past I think three or four years

1:36.4

Unfortunately we couldn't make it this year and we've got Shelley on video here and I know exactly where she's at

1:42.2

We were talking about how you're

1:43.7

sitting down in the sampling room which I know right to your right I believe is a

1:48.6

fridge with a bunch of beer in it and I'm so jealous that I can't be up there
