Chapter 14

The small bell over the shop door tinkled as Mick entered Stevenson's books.

There was no one behind the counter. He peered into the

depths of the store, but there was no sign of anyone, customers or staff. he turned and checked the sign in the front door window.

The open side was definitely facing out into the street.

He raised his eyebrows and listened for sounds of life, but except for quiet classical music, it was silent. He shrugged. Obviously she wasn't here. Fate was giving him a sign. He turned to go.

Oh, hello, said Sally. How are you? Mick looked back into the shop to see her emerging from a flight of stairs that led down somewhere below the store.

Oh, I didn't see the stairs. Hi, Sally smiled.

or maybe if you'd have got further than the door mad you'd have spotted them.

Mick felt his cheeks reddening.

Yeah, he noticed that she was carrying a large paintbrush and saw an opportunity to change the subject.

Been decorating? No, she came up to the counter and put the brush somewhere behind it.

We use it to dust the tops of the books. It's very effective.

Oh, excellent, Sally smiled.

Well, I don't know if I'd go that far, but it's better than a cloth.
