Adam stepped up to the cash point and inserted the card as he had seen so many people do before. His viewpoint then had been from the ground beside

the machine. Not today. Today he stood at the machine with his own card. It may have had the name P Reynolds embossed upon it, but it was

his nonetheless. Peter kept a very orderly file of his banking affairs. He hadn't recorded his PIN number, but he had

made a note of his password in the event of an emergency. Adam had phoned the bank and informed them of the loss of his PIN number. The bank had then

very kindly mailed P. Reynolds a new one. Adam now tapped the numbers into the machine.

The screen invited him to select a service.

He selected on-screen balance.

The machine then informed him that he had 3,249 pounds to play with.

Thank you, said Adam.

A woman behind him in the Q He pressed yes, yes, then selected cash withdrawal.

The machine asked him how much he required.

50 pounds.

He pressed the corresponding button.

The woman behind him unconsciously took a step back. A few seconds passed before the machine

disgorge the money. Technology, Adam smiled as he gathered the cash.

What will they think of next?

He took his card and slipped it into the pocket of his trousers.

He turned to the woman behind him.
