Summary

One of the things we’ve been asked the most lately is about our eating habits during lockdown. It seems that being within arm’s reach of the fridge amplifies a lot of thoughts about food, and often, we engage in an internal battle about that thought. The next time thoughts about food or eating habits arise, try to notice it, acknowledge it, and act appropriately — not react emotionally. Hi, it's Andy here and welcome to Radio Headspace and Thursday morning. So one of the most frequent

0:20.2

things I would say people have written in about over the last few months is the challenges

0:25.5

of being in lockdown and one of the biggest challenges being aware of their eating habits.

0:33.4

So this idea of sort of compulsively eating their way through lockdown perhaps. I don't

0:38.5

know if it's something that you've struggled with. I know a lot of people have said just

0:42.3

being at home and being within arms reach of the fridge very often. It's just a really

0:47.3

challenging thing. I think very often with food, I mean there's a lot of internal dialogue that

0:55.6

goes on around food. I don't know if you've ever witnessed it, even if you just walk down the street.

1:00.4

Just as an example, you might walk past a cake shop. Maybe there's a doughnut in the window.

1:05.4

And as you will past it, there's a good chance that the thought might pop into the mind. I'd really

1:10.5

like a doughnut. Now at that point we have a choice. We can either engage in the thought or we can

1:15.8

see the thought and let it go. And what happens more often than not is that we couldn't have an

1:20.3

inner conversation. So we might continue walking. But in our mind, there's a conversation. It's like,

1:26.0

oh, I'd really like a doughnut. Yeah, but I probably shouldn't. Yeah, but you're trying to be more

1:31.5

kind to yourself. So maybe you should. Yeah, but I'm on a diet and I'm trying to. Yeah, but

1:37.0

and we kind of get into these inner conversations and we might find ourselves five or ten minutes

1:41.9

miles away from the doughnut shop, but still thinking about the doughnuts.

1:49.8

When we find ourselves in a very small space with food all around us, sometimes that inner

1:56.2

dialogue can be amplified. And we start to experience that a lot more. And the temptation is to think

2:01.7

that somehow we have to follow every thought that appears in the mind. And by the way,

2:06.8

just to be clear, this isn't about diets or eating less or anything like that. It's simply

2:11.7

being aware of the habits, the tendencies of mind around the topic of food. So when a thought arises
