And a very good morning to you. It is Saturday, November the 27th. I'm Ali Velshi. A new COVID-19

variant is causing global alarm as some countries scramble

to enact fresh travel restrictions in an attempt to contain the latest coronavirus threat.

The World Health Organization has classified the Omicron variant as a highly transmissible virus

of concern. That's the same category that includes the Delta variant, which continues to

drive up COVID-related hospitalizations and deaths in part of the U.S. and Europe. Health officials

say many of the mutations found within the Omicron variant are linked to increased antibody

resistance, which may affect how the virus behaves with regard to vaccines,

treatments, and transmissibility.

The origins of the Omicron variant are currently unknown.

However, scientists in South Africa first discovered that it was driving a spike in cases

there on Thursday.
