in many ways, owe my career to this guy. When I first came to Washington, D.C., a billion years ago, I was doing a informational

job interview for this guy, Ben Wattenberg at the American Enterprise Institute, and he asked

me what the latest book I read was, and I said, well, I've been reading this guy, Francis

Fukuyama, is the end of history in The Last Man, And he was like, I never understood, what is that about?

And even though I was only about 14 pages into the book, my answer was sufficiently competent

sounding, the word there being sounding, that that was apparently the tipping point.

And they gave me the internship

which was led to a job which led to a decade at the American Enterprise Institute and since then

not just out of loyalty to it the that and I have subsequently finished the book but um not just

out of loyalty to that but I've been one of the leading defenders of the end of history thesis.

Sometimes I would argue it sounded like I'm more of a defender of it than our guest here today, Francis would be.

He is the author of many books.

He's probably up there with Paul Johnson of authors I've gotten the most out of over the years.
