Summary

It's a deep dive into Ohio State recruiting strategy on this Wednesday Buckeye Talk as Doug Lesmerises, Nathan Baird and Stephen Means drop a two-hour episode for the first time in a while. There's a lot here, talking about the recruitments for players like Dylan Raiola, Quinn Ewers, Terrelle Pryor, Micah Parsons, Bronny James, Tate Martell and times where the Buckeyes did or didn't accept a certain amount of risk in a recruitment. First (0:30) is a discussion comparing how much risk the Buckeyes should take in football recruiting compared to basketball recruiting. Then it's on to five areas of potential risk in football recruiting and what Ohio State should do: Players with a degree of celebrity (23:31) Players who are focused on NIL (41:41) Players who are national five-stars with no OSU connections who might easily change their minds (1:02:20) Players with potential off-field issues (1;23:39) Players who might create NCAA issues (1:38:29) And last, a wrap up of fan thoughts and if the guys think Ohio State is handling risk correctly right now (1:46:55). Ohio State text subscribers were surveyed to judge how they feel about each area of risk, and Doug, Nathan and Stephen dug into each one. Thanks for listening to Buckeye Talk. Hey, hey, where you been? But God talk is about to begin. Hey, hey, hey, come on in.

0:29.0

Welcome back to your Wednesday book. I talk from clueless.com and just to prove that it's not a third straight day of just me Nathan say hello.

0:35.0

Oh, Steven say hello. So I just so that's so if you were if you were like 20 seconds in and you're like if it's just Doug for a third straight day, I'm out.

0:47.0

Doug Lamarie's Nathan Baird Steven means I like this topic risk risk. I am a cautious person, but I start like talking about risk, but not participating in it.

0:59.0

This is about risks in recruiting and in low these many years, I don't think we've exactly done a podcast like this on Buckeye talk.

1:09.0

And the reason that I wanted to do it, Steven is because of Brony James and this is not a basketball podcast because if it was another 80% of you would shut it off right now.

1:19.0

We are going to use the Brony James example to talk about how much risk Ohio State football should take in recruiting and we'll talk a tiny bit about basketball within that.

1:31.0

We have different types of risks as we've defined it like it's a risk because the player is this.

1:39.0

We have a survey from our tech subscribers to tell we rank like where should they take a risk and what circumstances where shouldn't they, but we do want to talk about Brony James a little bit first, Steven.

1:51.0

And so since this basketball will start with you, how much risk do you think there would have been in Ohio State landing Brony James, the son of the Brony James, a very good basketball player, but really to me, obviously the risk you're talking about is the spotlight that would come with it.

2:13.0

Do you believe there would have been real risk in that, Steven?

2:16.0

I do because I don't know if Ohio State's basketball program is set up to handle the media attention that was going to come with Brony James just because Brony James is the top 50 recruit.

2:28.0

He uses the McDonald's on American. He's a lot of things.

2:31.0

I don't know. He's not Zion in terms of talent. He's not job or where he's not these guys where it was a sure fire.

2:38.0

That dude's really only in college because he has to be and he's going to be a one and done period.

2:43.0

It's no question about that stuff. And so now you're opening the door for what if Brony James isn't a starter? Do you really want to be the coach that isn't starting with Brony James's son at the Brony James's favorite college?

2:54.0

What if the Brony James has like a four or five game stretch of just bad games? What if this team plays really well and Brony James is no longer in the rotation?

3:02.0

Do you want to deal with that all year because you've got 14 guys who you handle this way?

3:07.0

And then there's this 15th guy who's a true freshman who is a very good basketball player, but I'm not sure he's, you know, a sure fire NBA player to that level that you have to handle very differently.

3:18.0

And it brings up. I think the whole point of his pot is like is the product you're getting worth the circus that's going to follow it.

3:28.0

And I don't know if that was necessarily a yes for Ohio State. The same way it would have been from obviously into the US or even Oregon.

3:37.0

And so I do think there's two things to that, right? There's the there's the negative things that happen perhaps in the course of winning that there just makes it a little less fun, a little more dramatic.
