Welcome back to Buckeye Talk. I'm Steven Means. That's the Fod Christ, Nick, is Andrew Gillis. This is day two of our defensive back talks.

Yesterday, we talked Devin Sanchez, Jermaine Matthews, and the cornerbacks. Today, we are talking about the safety position. And before we get into anything else about the safety position, I do want to give somebody credit real quick because I'm about to label something. and they were the people that got it.

Shout out to Bill Landis.

that was probably a smart thing to do. It's like, hey, instead of like us just deciding what

they're going to be called, what are you calling them? And the reason why is because we've had a million

names for safeties here. We've had adjusters and bandits.

We've had bullets because free safety and strong safety aren't good enough to just keep it basic.

So Bill asked Matt Grary and Grary told him exclusively.

The names of their safety positions are free safety, strong safety, and then star.

It's not a nickel. It's a star. And so as we have this conversation and we talk about all these different safeties, that's the buckets we're placing them in. They're either a free safety, they're a strong safety, or they are a star. And star has been used before. It's going to get tricky if you think a star is a star. Unless it's a star playing in the position. That's what I'm saying.

A star can be a star. Yeah. Not all safety is going to be stars. But not all stars can be stars. Right. Yeah. That's a good point. And so if we were going off of last year, where would I have put these safeties? I would have said, Caleb Downs is a strong safety. This is me saying this now.

This is not.

Jaylen's a straw a strong safety. This is me saying this now. This is not.

No, sorry. Caleb Downs is a free safety. Caleb McLean's a straw strong safety. And Lorenzo Stiles was the star position safety. And that's like, because sometimes you're playing nickel. Sometimes you're up high. It's maybe the position that moves around the most out of these three. And then like Caleb Downs just was a free safety. but he also was just Caleb Downs.
