I'm Alan Alder and this is Clear In Vivid Conversations About Connecting and Communicating.

We're starting our fourth season of Clear In Vivid very soon now and we thought we'd

bring you a little preview of what the conversations will be like.

I'm joined today by Graham and Sarah and Alice in our team and we're going to talk a little

bit about some of the conversations coming up.

Our first conversation is with Madeline Albright, the former secretary of state and she's

a delightful conversationalist and she's also an inventor of new ways of doing diplomacy.

She created this practice of wearing a pin that had a special meaning that was easily understood

by the person she was negotiating with and she'd wear it into the meeting and everybody

would be on edge.

What does the pin mean today?

So she'd have an advantage because she had the guessing game going and then she had this

other invention.

That was really interesting.

I invented the art of diplomatic kissing.

You can't kind of visualize Henry Kissinger arriving somewhere and giving somebody a big

hug or you know Jim Baker or whatever.

So I started that and it's much more complicated than meets the eye because in Latin America

some kiss on the right cheek and some on the left cheek and in France on both cheeks

and the Dutch three times and all that.

So I arrived in South Korea and big embrace good meeting and then I leave and all of a

sudden I get a call from a journalist saying don't you think the South Korean foreign
