Summary

Jesse thinks Bob has forgotten his birthday, which leads to a discussion of their favorite holidays. As fun as they are, they also create certain stresses. Whether it's Easter, Christmas, Thanksgiving, Boxing Day or Jesse's birthday, it's always good to show love and be patient with each other. The truth is, the best part of any holiday is being together with family and friends to celebrate the true meaning of the special day.

Average boy, he's average boy, he's average boy, he's average boy, look out, he's back with shoes untied at his ears, slick back, taking life on one day at a time, average boy and just bringing the rhyme.

Welcome to episode 52 of the official Average Boy podcast. I'm Jesse, editor of Focus on the Family Clubhouse Magazine.

0:33.0

And I'm Bob Smiley, aka Average Boy, aka the grateful gift giving guy with gumption.

0:39.6

Gumption? Wow, that's a fun way to say you're resourceful and gritty. Two things you definitely are Bob, and I'm guessing you're learning G words this week?

0:48.5

Actually, I'm still on T words, but I want to talk about holidays and birthdays today. In fact, that's my gift to the listeners. Plus, G words are fun to say.

0:57.5

Good gracious, you're right. And since you brought up the word gift, did you want to start this podcast by giving me my gift now? You know, my birthday was last week.

1:06.5

Yes, I know, I got all six of your texts reminding me. However, before I give you my gift, and I actually do have one, there's something we've forgotten to do on the last 51 podcast.

1:17.5

I think leave longer pauses so our listeners can laugh at the Jesse jokes. Okay, now that's really funny Jesse. No, we forgot to think Riley Armstrong for our theme music.

1:28.5

Riley Armstrong is a comedian, he's a singer, and more importantly, he's a huge Average Boy fan. You know, he has great taste.

1:36.5

And he created the opening theme music for us. You know the theme music. He's Average Boy. That's right. He did only I think he actually sang it in key. Unlike anyway, Riley is a gifted musician from Canada. Oh, speaking of Canada, do you know why hockey players don't tell jokes on the ice?

1:56.5

Oh, because they get the cold shoulder. That's funny, but not the answer I was looking for a hockey players don't tell jokes on the ice because they're afraid it might crack up.

2:08.5

Okay, I'm waiting for the punchline. That was it. That was the punchline crack up. Oh, I didn't recognize it. But before our listeners freeze our podcast because of your ice joke, I'd like to share one.

2:23.5

We got a funny joke sent in by a listener named Adrian. Why did the sand fall off the bike? Oh, I haven't heard this one. Why did the sand fall off the bike? It didn't pebble fast enough.

2:38.5

Okay, let's get back to the topic though. What's your favorite holiday? Obviously it's Christmas. You know, there's lots of food and gifts families get together. It's kind of like Thanksgiving and a birthday all combined in one.

2:52.5

Plus it's actually one special birthday. That's right. It's Jesus's birthday, which is God's greatest gift to us. He sent a son to pay the penalty for all the bad stuff that we do so we can personally know him. That's right. So how does your family celebrate Christmas?

3:10.5

We all wake up super early, usually around 6 a.m. And well, actually I usually wake up at 6 a.m. And then the rest of my family gets up around 602. My mom and dad then like to play a game called who can grab the trumpet out of my hand first.

3:26.5

Big is really competitive. I'm sure it does. And I think I remember your dad saying that silent night is one of his favorite songs even though he's never had one. That's totally true.

3:37.5

My brother is very loud. Anyway, we then have breakfast. My parents always make us eat breakfast before we get to the gifts. I usually suggest minute rice, but my mom insists on a huge slow breakfast. And then we get to open gifts.

3:51.5

Oh, nice. Yeah, we like to drag out the opening gifts process as much as possible. You know, lots of families just turn to the gifts like a shark feeding frenzy, but we have each person take turns opening gifts one at a time.

4:03.5

So that's where my dad got the idea. You know, we did that last year at Christmas and it took forever. We had all my cousins over my aunt and uncle, my grandparents. I'll never understand why adults open gifts so slowly.

4:19.5

By the time my grandpa is done opening gifts at Christmas, it's almost time for the ball to drop on New Year's Eve.

4:25.5

You know, I think some people just like to enjoy the entire process. The actual gift is not really all that important. It's about being together. However, it is an interesting topic because a lot of people do get stressed out over the holidays.
