Summary
What does it look like to pray when you're out of control? And what happens when desperation becomes the doorway to deeper trust?
This week on Off Script, Neil sits down with Matt Williams to unpack what didn't make it into Sunday's sermon on desperation and prayer. From hospital rooms to unanswered prayers, they talk honestly about what it means to depend on God when control slips through your fingers. The conversation moves from the Garden of Gethsemane to everyday life, parenting, grief, career changes, and reframes prayer as relational, not transactional. It's a reminder that surrender isn't weakness; it's training for trust.
The challenge:
As you step into a new year, don't just ask what you want to add. Ask what God is inviting you to lay down. Where might surrender make room for deeper dependence?
Hosts: Neil Gregory & Matt Williams

About Southland Christian Church
Southland is one church meeting in multiple locations across central Kentucky. We believe Jesus came for the lost and the broken, which means there's a place for everyone here. Around here, that means we worship defiantly, speak truth unashamedly, and extend grace generously.

| 0:34.5 | teaching from Lexington? You know, a little bit of context there, so a lot of people don't know this unless you attend the Lexington campus regularly. My wife and I started attending there back in 2016 when we were dating. Oh, no way. So it was kind of this cool, full circle, moment for us. Oh, that's awesome. To share on a Sunday morning from our campus. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So maybe for those who are listening, who don't know, tell me a little bit about yourself. |
| 0:56.3 | What do you do at Southland? |
| 0:57.5 | Yeah, some of yeah. So maybe for those who are listening who don't know, |

| 0:56.3 | What do you do at Southland? |
| 1:13.9 | Yeah, so my current role is on the campus lead at our Lexington campus on Richmond Road. I know sometimes there's a little bit of confusion around Richmond Campus, Richmond Road campus. The Lexingtononon campus on Richmond Road. Just clarify that. So I've been in this role for a little over two years now, initially jumped on staff in our group's ministry role. Got to lead that for a couple of years. And here we are. Awesome. Did you ever think, like, teaching on stage at Southland would be a thing? Not on my bingo card at all. Because you're a, not personal trainer. You're a physical therapist as your like previous job. |
| 1:28.8 | Now, there's some context there that might help a little bit. |
| 1:31.7 | So, and this might even get into what we'll talk about today. |
| 1:34.7 | Before I applied for the position at our campus for the group's role, I'd actually been encouraged to apply for a teaching position at the University of Kentucky through the PT program |
| 1:44.6 | that I graduated from. Okay. So teaching's kind of been in my heart. Okay. I just didn't know it would |
| 1:50.0 | evolve. And God, you're using it from ministry. Correct. Dude, that's awesome. So we're in this kind of |
| 1:55.6 | standalone weekend that we've got. You kind of wrapped up the year of 2025, last sermon of the year. When you get |
| 2:02.5 | asked to be like, hey man, can you do the last sermon for 2025? What kind of goes through your |
| 2:06.7 | head and your heart on like, what am I supposed to be talking about here? Yeah. So I think for our |
| 2:12.0 | audience, it'd be good to know with our preaching teaching calendar. We kind of have what I'd |
| 2:15.7 | call two primary buckets. So either we're |
