Estrogen and progesterone are the primary female sex hormones.

They are controlled by the hypothalamic, pituitary, gonadal axis, and they fluctuate during the menstrual cycle.

Estrogen is a steroid sex hormone mainly produced by the granulosa cells in the follicles in the ovaries in women.

Estrogen is also produced in smaller amounts by the adrenal glands, adipose or fat tissue,
