Very few writers could capture New York City in the early 1900s better than O'Henry, and he always

gave us some humor and usually a twist to his stories. In just a moment, two great short stories,

I had a gangle of words I just couldn't get right.

Big Jim Doherty was a sport.

He belonged to that race of men.

In Manhattan, it is a distinct race.

and dark overcoats in season with black velvet collars.

Of the domestic life of this sport, little is known.

It has been said that Cupid and Hyman sometimes take a hand in the game and copper the

queen of hearts to lose.
