I'm John John Bachelor Victor Davis Hanson was a fellow at the Hoover Institution.

He's a classicist at the same time.

He's been on National Public public radio I've been on national

public radio but it was a while back it's in the 20th century for me and I tell a story

quickly Victor because NPR's in the news again. In 1982 I had written a novel that or some reason

that's an accident of history I had written a novel about a war in the Falklands before the Falklands war happened.

And NPR called me up and said, how did you do this?

We've got the manuscript.

It was a dystopian tale, the birth of the People's Republic of Antarctica and the Falklands are on your way to that vision.

I was a young person and they were very nice to me.

There was a pre-interview and then one of their famous hosts came on.

I recognized his voice because I listened to NPR while I was writing the novel.

And I was very flattered, and the conversation went on.

I had to borrow a phone.

There were no mobile phones in those days.

Somebody had a phone I gave him a phone number and went to it because I didn't have one.

Very nice to very generous. There was no politics that I recall whatsoever.

No identity politics, no asking whether I'm Republican or Democratic,

nothing even vaguely tricky. This is Ronald Reagan's first term. I think you've had a similar experience with NPR over the years.
