Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Jack Spear. The Supreme Court is declining to fast track an appeal about whether former President

Donald Trump is immune from prosecution.

NPR's Kerry Johnson reports the court turned aside a plea from Special

Council Jack Smith with no comment.

Prosecutors had urged the High Court to expedite an issue at the heart of American

democracy. Does the former president enjoy a lifetime shield from prosecution for actions

he took while in the White House? At stake is the fate of Donald Trump's federal election

interference trial, which had been set for March 2024.

The action now turns to the Appeals Court in Washington, D.C., which will hear arguments early

in the new year.

The case could make its way back to the Supreme Court soon, but it's not clear

how long the DC trial might be delayed or whether it will happen before the presidential election.

After days of wrangling over the attacks, the UN Security Councils adopted a resolution

expressing deep concern about the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza.

And it's calling for urgent steps to immediately allow safe and unhindered humanitarian

access.

NPR's Michelle Kellman reports the resolution was watered down to get the U.S. on board.
