Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Jack Spear on the fifth day of an extended six-day truce, Israel has released 30 Palestinian prisoners

and detainees in exchange for 12 hostages handed over by Hamas.

NPR's Elder Beardsley reports the truce is set to end after Wednesday,

but both sides would express their hope

for further extensions of the pause.

The Foreign Ministry of Qatar, which has mediated the pause in fighting

between Israel and Hamas

tweeted that the Palestinian prisoners released include 15 women and 15 miners.

It appears many of them were held for days or weeks and had not been

charged with crimes. Since the truce began five days ago, 60 Israeli and 21 foreign

hostages have been released by Hamas, Israel has freed 180

Palestinians. Israel has said the truce could be prolonged further if Hamas continues to free

at least 10 Israeli hostages per day, but with

fewer women and children still in captivity that might mean freeing some Israeli

men for the first time.
