Israel and Hamas. NPR's Peter Kenyon reports Palestinian emergency crews search for

survivors after airstrikes killed at least a dozen people in one house in the central Gaza Strip.

Residents of Darabala in Gaza searched for their neighbors in the rubble of a house destroyed

in an Israeli airstrike. Wounded women and children were helped on to stretchers and into an

ambulance. Palestinian media reported Israeli shells hit several villages. Hamas said its

fighters targeted a tank with a rocket east of Hanyunis. The militant group also announced the

death of Hamas commander Talal Al-Hindi in his family in central Gaza. Meanwhile, Israeli and

Hezbollah forces traded fire across the Lebanese border as violence escalates in the north.

Peter Kenyon in NPR News Jerusalem. Arab leaders, mating in Egypt, are warning that the root

cause of conflict between Israel and Palestinian groups will need to be addressed to prevent and even

wider conflict. NPR's Jaina Rath has more from Aman Jordan. Arab leaders of the UN Secretary General

and some European officials met in Cairo today to discuss the war in Gaza. There were two

main messages. Jordan's King Abdullah and the Egyptian President Abdel Fattaheseesi

said the only way to lasting peace was an independent state for the millions of Palestinians

forced from their homes since Israel was established in 1948. The UN Secretary General and the French

foreign minister called for a humanitarian corridor to be open through Gaza to deliver aid to
