Secretary of State Anthony Blinken will visit Israel Thursday to show support

and see what more Israel needs as it responds to an unprecedented attack by Hamas,

as NPR's Michelle Kalman explains at least 14 Americans have been killed,

and about 20 are still missing.

State Department spokesman Matthew Miller says Blinken wants to hear directly from leaders

in Israel about what they're facing and how the US can help.

And then to send a message to the government of Israel and the people of Israel that we are

there to support them as they fight against these brutal terrorist attacks,

and to talk about what additional assistance we can provide them.

Miller says the US offered some experts in hostage recovery,

and Blinken has been urging his counterparts in the region to use any influence they have with

Hamas to demand the release of all hostages.

The State Department says some Americans are being held but won't give a precise number.

Even as the Biden administration appears to be employing diplomacy in terms of Israel's declared war

against Hamas, President Biden also made it clear again today the US stands with Israel that

includes supplying the Israeli military with ammunition and interceptor missiles.
