President Biden is sending more active duty troops to North Carolina

as the state recovers from the devastation left by Hurricane Helene.

And Pears Luke Garrett has more.

President Biden is ordering 500 soldiers to move into Western North Carolina after Governor

Roy Cooper requested the additional support.

In a statement, the White House says the troops will bring quote advanced technology to assist

with response and recovery efforts.

The move comes just days after Biden sent 1,000 active duty troops to the Tarhill State.

Those troops are helping the National Guard deliver food, water, and medicine to communities isolated because of Hurricane Helene.

The President also said he has been briefed on Milton,

a potentially catastrophic storm that could hit the same areas just ravaged by Helene,

and that he stands ready to assist local and state leaders, quote, regardless of political party.

And Milton is now a category one storm that's forecast to strengthen and come ashore in Florida

as a category two or possibly a category 3 storm.

Tampa faces a significant risk and forecaster say it could get a storm surge nearing 10 feet.

The state's governor expanded the state of emergency to more than 50

counties.
