It's crunch time for House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to pass a short-term spending bill to

keep the government running for past Saturday, NPR's Windsor Johnston reports McCarthy

slamming the Senate version of a continuing resolution that advanced in the upper chamber

earlier in the week.

Speaker McCarthy says the Senate bill does nothing to deal with border security.

McCarthy says he's also facing challenges from a hard-right faction of his caucus as

negotiations continue.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is once again blasting McCarthy for going back on

a budget deal that he and President Biden struck earlier this year.

Sadly, every move the Speaker has taken since the bipartisan deal in June has been to

shred any prospects of bipartisanship by focusing on the views of the radical few instead

of the many.

Federal agencies have started warning their employees that they're preparing for a government

shutdown and that they might have to go without a paycheck.
