The Israeli military and the Iran-backed Hezbollah militant group traded heavy fire overnight

Israeli airstrikes hit hundreds of targets in southern Lebanon and

Hezbollah fire missiles deeper into Israel.

NPR's Ruth Sherlock has the latest.

This is the most significant escalation on the Israeli-Lebanes border in almost a year of war.

In southern Lebanon, residents described huge explosions lighting up the night sky.

The Israeli military said it hits some 290 targets including Hezbollah rocket

launchers. In northern Israel sirens wailed through the night, warning of

incoming rockets and missiles. Some of these hit deeper into Israel causing damage just north of the

major city of Haifa and injuring four people. Hezbollah said it targeted an Israeli

Air Force base near the city. It said the escalation was in response to Israeli attacks in Lebanon this past week,

which included an air strike on an eight-story building in a densely populated neighborhood of Beirut to target Hezbollah commanders.

four people dead and 18 others injured.
