Live from NPR News in Washington. I'm Jack Spear. In Lebanon at least nine people

were killed more than 2,700 others were injured today after

handheld pagers used by the militant group Hezbollah for security messages exploded.

Israel has claimed responsibility according to a U.S. official not authorized to speak publicly.

Hezbollah vowed to avenge the attack.

Israel and Hezbollah have been fighting across the Lebanese Israeli border since the war in Gaza began.

Lebanon's health ministry declared a medical emergency, casualty streamed into hospitals across the country and Lebanese citizens

showed up to give blood. Lebanese health officials said at least 200 of

those wounded were seriously injured. Among the dead were a child and two Hezbollah fighters, the Lebanese group said.

Iranian media said Iran's ambassador to Lebanon,

Most of the Amani was slightly wounded. The apparent attack raises already heightened fears

that the conflict between Hezbollah and Israel could escalate into all-out war.
