California's Governor Gavin Newsom is calling out fossil fuel companies at the opening ceremonies

of Climate Week in New York City today.

Sarah Hossani of Membersition KQED reports, it comes a day after the state filed a lawsuit

against five of the world's largest oil companies for their role in climate change.

The lawsuit details how the companies lied about the dangers of fossil fuels, contributing

to wildfires, drought, and the sea level rise in the state.

Newsom described the impact on public health and the public's coffers.

It's incalculable, in terms of the dollars, the lives lost, the funerals, the dead bodies

in Paradise, California.

People whose lives have been cut short because of health risks and health-related costs.

Thousands of climate protesters also gathered in New York ahead of a meeting by the UN General

Assembly this week.

McCarthy is facing another rebellion from hard-right Republicans in his conference who want deep

spending cuts.

They see the threat of a government shutdown as their best leverage to get those cuts.

But a shutdown could be blamed on Republicans, and that's why McCarthy is trying to get

his conference to agree on a short-term stopgap funding bill to keep the government open
