Two new abortion bans went into effect this week in Indiana, abortion is now completely

banned, and in South Carolina it's banned after the very first weeks of pregnancy.

effect is because of changes at the state Supreme Court.

Back in January, the state Supreme Court in South Carolina ruled that the six-week abortion

ban passed by lawmakers violated women's privacy rights, blocking the ban.

But the author of the majority opinion in that case, the only female justice on the court

left because she reached the mandatory retirement age.

She was replaced by a male justice, making it an all-male bench.

The South Carolina legislature then passed a very similar law this spring, and when that

six-week abortion ban was considered by this new set of justices, they ruled that it

was legal, and the law just took effect.

South Carolina joins its neighboring state, Georgia, and having a six-week ban, because

many people don't learn they're pregnant by that point.
