Efforts have turned to recovery in Southern California as communities deal with the aftermath

of flash flooding and mudslides brought on by Tropical Storm Hillary.

The resort town of Palm Springs and surrounding desert cities east of Los Angeles receives

some three inches of rain.

The area typically sees roughly five inches a year.

Shane Reckhart is a spokesman for Riverside County that includes Palm Springs.

He says now that the sun is out, the county is assessing the damage.

We're such a large county with 7,300 square miles that there's a lot of area to check.

He says flooding is still blocking roads in Palm Springs and the storm knocked out

the 911 emergency call system there on Sunday night.

Emergency officials also have their eye on debris flows in areas where wildfires burned

recently.

Indiana's near total abortion ban is finally in effect after weeks of legal uncertainty.

Indiana Public Broadcasting's Brandon Smith reports the Indiana Supreme Court denied abortion

providers last disaffirmed to halt the ban.

The law bans abortions except for in limited cases.

When the life for serious health of the pregnant person is at risk, when there's a lethal

fetal anomaly, but only up to 20 weeks, or in cases of rape or incest, but only up to

10 weeks.
