Senior officials from Israel, Qatar, and the U.S. met in Rome today to try to come to a deal that would see the release

of hostages held by Hamas in exchange for hundreds of Palestinians detained by Israel.

Israeli Mossad Director David Barnia is back in Israel after meeting his counterparts

to discuss the details of a deal that may see the end of the war in Gaza.

Negotiations have stalled over the past few months with one main obstacle being

that Hamas wants a complete end to the war and Israel wants the option to keep fighting.

Barnier said that talks are continuing in Rome, but provided no other details.

This comes after a rocket strike killed at least 12 children and teens in the town of

Mejdel Shems in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, according to Israeli officials.

Israel blamed Hezbollah for the attack.

Hezbollah has so far denied.

There was hope that moving a hostage deal along would ease tensions at the Lebanon-Israel border,

where Hezbollah and Israel have traded fire since

October.
