expand mental health care.

NPR's Deepa Shiverham reports the new rule will push health plans to provide better

access to mental health services.

The new rule proposed by the Biden administration says health insurance plans need to provide

adequate mental health care options.

It will also aim to prevent insurance companies from limiting people to more expensive out-of-network

rates for mental health care and substance use disorders compared to other medical providers.

The White House's new rule doesn't spell out clear repercussions the administration

can take if health insurance plans don't comply.

But the administration says the rule closes some loopholes that have existed in the past

for companies.

The rule will be open for public comment for at least 60 days before it can actually

go into effect.
