President Biden spoke by phone with Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Yahoo for about a half. and

yahue for about a half hour today. As NPR's Tamar Keith reports, there's renewed

optimism about a possible deal to have hostages released in a ceasefire in Gaza.

An administration official briefing reporters after the call between the leaders

said there has been a breakthrough on a critical impasse in negotiations between Israel

and Hamas. The official said there is an agreement impasse.

The official said there is an agreement on a framework that would see

hostages released in exchange for a pause in fighting

and a surge of humanitarian assistance into Gaza.

The agreement would be implemented over multiple phases, with all women and men over 50

being returned first.

But that doesn't mean a deal is right around the corner.

The official said there are still a lot of details to be worked out.

Vice President Harris was also on the call,

along with top diplomats.
