The US Supreme Court as ruled state courts have the power to review redistricting plans

and election laws passed by state lawmakers, as NPR's Hansy LeWong reports the ruling rejects

a once-fringe legal theory that many court watchers feared could have destabilized upcoming

elections.

Chief Justice John Roberts joined fellow conservative justices Brett Kavanaugh and Amy

Coney Barrett, as well as the court's three liberal justices in a six-to-three decision

for the case known as Moore vs. Harper.

Their majority ruling rejects the idea known as the independent state legislature theory,

and confirms that state courts and state constitutions can act as checks and balances

to congressional redistricting plans and laws about federal elections made by state lawmakers.

This ruling brings a big sigh relief to many election watches, who feared the high court's

endorsement of the theory could have led to more lawsuits and open legal questions about

the 2024 elections.

Unusually hot weather continues to be a problem in Texas, where residents in many parts of

the state have been dealing with triple-digit temperatures for the past several weeks,

from Houston Public Media, Jack Williams reports.

A stubborn high pressure system has been stuck over a large part of Texas and combined

with high humidity has led to dangerously hot conditions.

Jonathan Garcia is an emergency room nurse who had been top hospital in Houston and says

they're seeing an increase in patients dealing with heat exhaustion.
