Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Chinese President Xi Jinping, capping off two

days of meetings in Beijing.

It's the first visit to China by a US Secretary of State in five years.

But as NPR's Emily Fang reports, the two sides are not expecting any diplomatic breakthroughs

at this time.

Xi Jinping told Blinken he hopes the US can make, quote, positive contributions to stabilizing

China's US relations.

He brought up his meeting with President Biden in Indonesia last year and said he hoped

the two countries could build on progress made there.

She is expected to visit the US in November and US diplomats are hoping today's meeting

with Blinken can reboot some of the dialogues the US and China once had.

This began the US and China also agreed to increase the number of commercial flights

between the two countries.

The number of flights had dropped to just a fraction of previous volumes during the pandemic.

Israeli troops and Palestinian militants are engaged in a fierce battle in the West Bank

city of Jineen.

Officials say at least four Palestinians were killed and dozens wounded.

Israel says at least seven of its soldiers were also wounded.
