Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Janine Herbst.

President Biden says he spoke to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy tonight and that they have

a debt ceiling agreement that they are ready to take to Congress.

Biden says the deal is good news for Americans.

It takes the threat of catastrophic fall off the table.

Protects our hard-earned and historic economic recovery.

And the agreement also represents a compromise, as means no one got everything they want.

And that's the responsibility of governing.

And he says that protects key priorities and values he and congressional Democrats fought

for, including Social Security, Medicare, and help for veterans.

The bipartisan agreement now goes to the House and Senate.

A vote is scheduled to take place on Wednesday before June 5th deadline when the U.S. would

run out of money to pay its bills.

It's now up to the state Senate in Texas whether the state's attorney general can

Paxton keeps his job.

He was suspended yesterday after the Texas House voted to impeach him.

Texas Public Radio's Jerry Clayton has more.

Paxton has been accused of constitutional bribery, dereliction of duty and retaliation

against former employees.
