Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Janine Herbst.

President Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy talked today by phone about the

debt ceiling limit as Biden flew back from the G7 summit in Japan.

McCarthy called the talks productive.

Their staffs will work tonight and then Biden and McCarthy will meet in person tomorrow.

These talks have been on and off and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen once again today

reiterated that the U.S. will run out of money to pay its bills in early June and that

action has to be taken.

I would say we're focused on raising the debt ceiling and there will be hard choices.

If that doesn't occur, there can be no acceptable outcomes if the debt ceiling isn't raised

regardless of what decisions we make.

Speaking there to NBC's Meet the Press, but Yellen says if it isn't raised, some bills

will have to go unpaid.

And President Biden met with the leaders of two key Asian allies, Japan and South Korea,

on the sidelines of that G7 summit in Japan.

And Piers Anthony Cune reports from Hiroshima, the three discussed dealing with North Korea's

nuclear threats.

A read out from the White House says President Biden, South Korea's President Yoon Sung-yul

and Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida discussed how to improve trilateral coordination on

North Korea.

Biden also praised Yoon and Kishida for what he called their courageous work to improve

bilateral ties and put aside historical disputes left over from World War II.
