Immigrant advocates are suing the Biden administration over sharp new limits on asylum at the

southern border.

In Pierce Joel Rose reports, the new rule took effect as pandemic border restrictions

known as Title 42 expired overnight.

The ACLU and other immigrant advocacy groups filed a legal challenge to a new Biden administration

rule that makes it much harder for migrants to get asylum if they cross the border illegally

after passing through Mexico or another country.

Advocates argue the rule is nearly identical to previous asylum restrictions put in place

during the Trump administration that were blocked in court, and they're seeking to reopen

an existing lawsuit before a federal judge in California.

The strict new asylum rule is a key part of the Biden administration's strategy to

deter migrants from crossing the border illegally.

The administration disputes that the new rule is the same as Trump's because it has some

exemptions for the most vulnerable, and it's paired with new legal pathways.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen says America cannot default on its debt.

It defaults with threatened the gains that we've worked so hard to make over the past few

years in our pandemic recovery, and it would spark a global downturn that would set us

back much further.

Yellen, who's in Japan for talks with finance leaders ahead of next week's G7 meeting,

says the U.S. has raised or suspended the debt ceiling limit almost 80 times since 1960,
