Coleman, the union representing Hollywood writers says a strike has begun.

Picket lines will go up this afternoon, and P.R.'s Giles Knighter says this is the writer's

first walk out in 15 years.

The writer's guild of America announced a strike just before midnight when the current

contract expired.

Talks broke down last night with the alliance of motion picture and television producers,

which represent studios such as Disney and Netflix.

The guild is seeking better pay for its 11,500 members in Los Angeles, New York, and elsewhere.

The alliance says it offered generous increases amid the rise of streaming, but the two sides

were unable to reach a deal.

President Biden has phoned House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to set up a meeting next week

about the debt ceiling.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warns the federal government's ability to borrow money

expires by June 1st unless Congress takes action, and lawmakers have been at a stalemate.

The Senate Judiciary Committee hears testimony today over whether there should be a separate

code of ethics that binds the justices of the U.S. Supreme Court, and P.R.'s Nina

Tottenberg reports.

In recent months, there's been a cascade of news reports about hundreds of thousands of

dollars in undisclosed gifts to Justice Clarence Thomas from a Republican mega-donor, as well

as stories about the conduct of other justices.
