President Biden told Senate Democrats today he is splitting with the party and will not

exercise his veto power and legislation that will block a new criminal code from taking

effect in the nation's capital.

Republicans are leading the effort in Congress to block a new DC crime law approved by the

Democratic-led city council earlier this year.

Congress is using a fast track process to block the law from taking effect.

It's already passed the House and is on track to pass the Senate as soon as next week.

While much of the new law is non-controversial, critics oppose provisions that would reduce

maximum penalties for crimes like car jackings and expand rights to jury trials for certain

misdemeanor offenses.

Biden's decision not to use his veto power to side with local DC leaders will deliver

Republicans a rare legislative victory and potentially help to notculate the president

from charges that he soft on crime ahead of his expected re-election bid.

The EPA chose three sites in Ohio to send toxic waste from the East Palvestine to Rellman,

but as Ethan Sandwice from Member Station WFIU reports, some of that waste is being shipped

400 miles away to a small town in Indiana.

The landfill in Roachdale, Indiana is owned by waste management company Heritage Environmental.

And some of the residents of the town are raising their objections.
