Live from MPR News in Washington, on Corvac Olman, the death toll from the earthquake in Turkey

in Syria has now grown to more than 16,000 people.

Rescuers have been frantically trying to reach trapped survivors in collapsed buildings.

Now the World Health Organization is warning of a looming secondary disaster.

The region is frigid and snowy, and the WHO says hundreds of thousands remain without

shelter.

The BBC's Tom Bateman has more from Atauna, Turkey.

It's extremely cold overnight, subzero temperatures are heavy snowfall in parts of northern Syria

as well, so that's really affecting the humanitarian effort now.

The further from here you go, a Skendran, for example, is one city, a two or three hours drive

away, and there, over the last day or two, you know, we've been seeing how conditions

are much, much harder than here.

People were struggling to get even basic supplies to get food and blankets and to stay

warm and to get shelter.

And that has been the source of many of the complaints and the sense of anger that people

have, that the relief effort is still struggling to get to many places.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has just addressed the European Parliament in Brussels.

He's looking for new weaponry to help his country defend against Russia's invasion.

Zelensky wants fighter jets.

In today's speech, he denounced Russia as the most, quote, anti-European force in the

world.
