A coalman, emergency teams are racing against time to rescue survivors of a powerful earthquake

and hundreds of aftershocks in eastern Turkey and northern Syria.

NPR's Peter Kenyon reports from Istanbul officials say the death toll now stands at more

than 5,000 people.

The powerful earthquake brought down thousands of buildings trapping survivors beneath the

rubble.

Rescue crews are dealing with ongoing aftershocks and unstable structures in an effort to find

in free survivors.

In hot-type province officials say up to 1,500 buildings were destroyed and there were

numerous reports of people trapped.

Those who escaped the wreckage were sheltering in sports centers or public buildings.

A Navy ship arrived at the port of Iskenderun, where the hospital collapsed in the quake to bring

survivors to medical facilities in the city of Mersen.

The earthquake damage situation is horrific in northern Syria.

The Syrian government is asking for help from the United Nations and other countries.

It's seeking food aid and rescue teams to find earthquake survivors.

This comes as Syria has been engulfed for years in a civil war.

The White House and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy are still sparring over the nation's

death ceiling.
