Colman, numerous and mostly peaceful demonstrations were held across the U.S. over the weekend, protesting

the police beating death of Black Memphis motorist Tyree Nichols.

Mourners marched on streets and gathered in churches.

The Memphis Police Chief says she is permanently disbanding the unit to which the accused

officers belonged.

The Memphis Scorpion Unit was formed to address violent crime.

Nichols' family is calling for an investigation of the unit.

The activists in Memphis are also calling for changes to national laws and policies to

stop police misconduct.

Community leader Reverend J. Lawrence Turner, who's worked on reimagining policing initiatives

in Memphis, is also calling for the passage of federal reform measures.

He pointed to the George Floyd Justice and Policing Act, which seeks to increase accountability

nationally for officers.

This time it's Memphis, Tennessee, but we know we've been in Minnesota, we've been in

Baton Rouge, we've been in Baltimore, we've been all over this country.

When incidents like this have happened, so we need a federal response.

Nichols' parents and their attorney have also proposed the idea of a law in Tennessee

named after Nichols that would strengthen an officer's duty to intervene.
