Many Southern California residents are trying to break clear of the dangerously poor air

quality brought on by unrelenting smoke from several major wildfires.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna says some areas,

quote, look like a bomb was dropped in them. He expects the death toll currently at five will climb.

NPR's Kirk Sigler is near the Palisades fire, which has burned more than 17,000 acres.

I'm standing here on Pacific Coast Highway. It's really this eerie smell,

among other things. You can smell the sea over here, the waves crashing, and then it's just this

sulfury, charred smell of burning rubble and vegetation. I'm even looking at a fire truck

trying to save a house right in front of me here.

It doesn't look like they're going to do it, but embers have been still flying in and catching things on fire.

I think that's partly why they don't have an updated destruction tally because it's still just such a fluid situation.

The U.S. is observing a national day of morning for the late former president,

Jimmy Carter.

He died last month at the age of 100.

Moments ago, Carter's flagdrape casket was placed on board the plane to be taken back home to Georgia.
