Live from NPR news in Washington, I'm Jack Spear. Wildfires are still raging in Southern

California where bone-dry conditions and high winds have led to thousands of evacuations

and thousands of

properties destroyed. At least two people have died in the Pacific Palisades alone. The fire is

now consumed nearly 16,000 acres. Lease, Hugh reports from Los Angeles.

Firefighters have struggled to contain any of the four major fires burning in Los Angeles County.

Hotels are reporting full capacity, and the county has set up evacuation centers across the

area as residents flee.

High winds continue to blow embers that are sparking new flames.

Josh Previn evacuated from his Pacific Palisades home on Tuesday.

Everything has to do with the winds.

If the winds are blowing in the wrong direction,

there's nothing you can do to stop it.

Wind advisories remain in effect in the area. Investigators have yet to pinpoint a cause of the fires. For NPR news, I'm Elise Hugh in Los Angeles County.
