A new data analysis from a researcher at the University of Texas at Austin

finds women who believe they may soon be affected by abortion restrictions may be more likely to

request abortion pills even if they're not pregnant.

NPR Sarah McCammon has more.

The analysis looked at data from a European group that provides medication abortion through

the male and telemedicine.

University of Texas researcher Abigail Aiken examined data from more than 48,000 people

in the US who chosen what's known as advanced provision or requesting abortion

pills in case they're needed in the future. Aiken says those requests spiked around events like

the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

If something's going to happen, it seems like people are reacting to that potential threat to access with,

oh, I better get prepared for what might be coming.

Aiken found a similar increase from people in states where lawmakers had proposed abortion

bans.
