Summary

We’re getting a clearer look at President-elect Donald Trump’s new cabinet and one thing is in common: loyalty. So far, Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) has been named as ambassador to the United Nations, Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-N.Y.) as administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency and Stephen Miller as deputy chief of staff for policy. Health care reporter Alice Miranda Ollstein joins Playbook co-author Rachael Bade to discuss what we know about other cabinet picks.

Good morning, everyone. I'm Playbook co-author Rachel Bade. It's Tuesday, November 12th,

0:09.7

and here's what's driving the day. President-elect Donald Trump is going to be tapping

0:14.4

Marco Rubio to be his secretary of state. That's according to the New York Times, which scooped the

0:19.4

news last night. And this move comes

0:21.6

as we saw a flurry of announcements yesterday on who's getting jobs in the new administration.

0:26.4

Those announcements included Stephen Miller, the hardline immigration proponent, who's going to be

0:30.1

deputy chief of staff of policy for Trump, and Congressman Mike Walts, the Green Beret veteran,

0:35.2

who's going to be the next White House national security advisor. Those selections are sending a signal about how different Trump's second term is going to be from his first. And here to talk with me about all of that is our health care reporter, Alice Miranda Olstein. Good morning, Alice. Hello. So, Alice, a lot of announcements in the past 72 hours. I can't keep track of them all. I know. We're back to

0:55.7

the late night tweets and constant barrage of news. And constant updating of stories, of course,

1:02.9

as you dealt with last night. So what can we glean from the past 72 hours or so of Trump appointments?

1:09.2

Yeah. So we took a look at both who Trump is bringing into the

1:14.0

administration and who he publicly said is not invited to the party. So I think taken together,

1:21.8

we're getting a picture that he is really relying on a small circle of people he perceives as loyalists, people who have

1:31.6

not criticized him in the last few years, who have not opposed him on policy or, you know,

1:39.6

any of the things he's done since leaving office or even in office. And so we, you know,

1:46.3

see that people who have been his sort of loudest and staunchest defenders are getting

1:52.2

key appointments talking about folks like Representative Elise Stefanik as the next U.N. ambassador,

1:59.8

as well as two immigration hardliners who were active in the

2:06.2

first Trump administration, Stephen Miller and Thomas Homan, although they are both being

2:11.7

named two White House roles rather than agency roles that would require Senate confirmation, which is interesting for

2:18.8

reasons we can discuss. Yeah. And also we've got Lee Zeldon, EPA administrator, Mike Wallace down in
